A little update…

Where do I begin? Chuck Todd, C-Span taping, or maybe HODA!?

Okay let’s start there. I’ve never seen all 150 of us so engaged in a speaker until Hoda arrived and wowed us. It was mostly the same story as her book but all animated from her including a song break to here some “black and yellow”. She’s hilarious and really as cheesy as it sounds inspiring. She has a lot of positiveness and is happy with everything she does.

Chuck Todd was great, he was funny or at least he thought he was funny. His panel got into some really heated debates that were super intense, we were really just waiting for Hoda.

Today, we were able to meet with our Senators. Mine was a short 30 second hello, with a photo. Her secretary was so nice as we waited for her to come back from a meeting. She kept me entertained while we waited. Capital Hill is beautiful, really all of Washington is. I enjoy the parks.

Well those darn beds, are well let’s say really hard….we woke up cold and disfunctional but somehow made our way down to breakfast. It was a decent traditional college food. Before we knew it we were off to the Newseum. The Newseum was filled with way more than I could have ever imagined. We started off viewing the Katrina exhibit,and even though it was just six years ago it’s amazing how much you forget. Seeing all the front page articles from around the world brought all of the horrifying times back. This was even more evident in the 9/11 exhibit. The film just devastates you. I don’t fully remember 9/11 as I was only in 2nd grade, but that movie brought so much sadness. It captured the frustration of journalists as they had to decide if they were going to help, if their was anything to do, or if they would document what was going on and spread the word to the world, that all watched devastated. This same thing was apparent throughout all of the Pulitzer Prize exhibit. This was by far my favorite exhibit. It featured photos from across the decades that were filled with so much emotion. We discussed this issue a lot when we got back to George Mason, if it’s okay to take photos of such horrible scenes. I believe that if you don’t take that photo how will the world ever learn? It’s a way of revealing to the world what terrible things happen in the world or some of the most beautiful. If we didn’t have journalists how would we ever know? Well we wouldn’t know nearly as much, ya know what they say ” A pictures worth a thousand words” I think this is enough cheesy moments for one day. On a brighter note tomorrow we get to see HODA! Woohoo, well here’s to getting sleep on those terrible beds!

You’ve got time

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from opening night from Chris Cillizza is that you don’t have to know what you want to do this very instant, month or year. We have so much time to find out what we really love to do and what we can do to make an impact on the world. In the end I just really hope to end up in a career I love, I think that’s the goal in everyone’s life it’s just the decision-making that makes it hard. It was really great to hear all his thoughts on such a crazy industry.

Other than that the night was filled with some really good food and some really hard beds!

Woofta, this whole blog thing is kind of intimidating. There are a lot of buttons to explore and themes to pick from. Hopefully by the end of the conference I’ll have this whole thing down.

Today, we started planning our trip for after the conference and it got me super excited to explore Washington D.C. Everyone keeps telling me it’s awesome and I think by the end of the trip I’ll agree. There’s plenty to do before then shopping for all this professional wear is right on the top of the list, along with reading those books, relaxing, and watching me some Kathie Lee and Hoda. It’s quite typical for me to just get up early to watch their show, I’ve even been known to do it at sleepovers. Regardless of my excitement for meeting Hoda, I’m excited to explore this field not so much in the journalism aspect but for the media part. To understand what people care to hear about, how to engage an audience in normal American life and how to get into such a tough field. As college gets closer I want to make sure this field is for me and that by pursuing it, it would be more than just a career, it could be my dream. Through this conference I hope to attain the knowledge and advise of the top performers in this field and figure out if this is right for me. If it is or isn’t, I’m positive I will learn so much and make some awesome friends from across the nation.
